As we get older, we become more vulnerable to vision loss. Reasons can range from cataracts to macular degeneration. While some vision changes can be expected, rapid vision loss is not normal. There are steps one can take to help preserve sight.

  1. Wear sunglasses when outside: Sunglasses protect the eyes from UV rays. UV exposure increases the risk of cataract development.
  2. Exercise: According to the American Optometric Association, exercise can lower the risk of glaucoma by as much as 40%.
  3. Eat a healthy diet: Research has found that a diet rich in vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids, lessens the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration.
  4. Stop smoking: Research has also found that smoking can raise the risk of age-related macular degeneration
  5. Keep a watch on eye-fatigue: Eye-fatigue is eye strain related to intense use for long periods of time. Activities such as driving and computer work can cause it. However, if it’s persistent it can be a sign of certain eye conditions.

Prevention is also key. Be sure to get regular eye exams. An ophthalmologist can keep track of eye health and catch problems as they start to arise.
